So, I’ve gotten back into skiing this winter. After a long hiatus. I’ve tried to get into it a couple times in the past, but it just didn’t take. Back in the day (very young beerdrinker through high school beer drinker), I skied a fair amount. Then college happened, and my K2 4500s just sat, and then they disappeared. I scored my dad’s old skis but operative is old. Though the Pre’s are pretty sweet with the Look bindings. I only went one or two times between 91 and ’00. In ’00 I gave it a go again, and had some fun, but then I had foot problems, and boots are torture devices as it is. Agony. Really really bad, so I hung ’em up. Then last year I was ready to give it a go again, having been to a super podiatrist and having somewhat happier feet. And there was no snow.

Now I’ve got it dialed. I’ve been twice. I’m going tomorrow, and have 8 more on the 10-pass after that. I waxed my skis for the first time tonite. That’s a tense job, having never done it before, and using the iron I got at the goodwill. I went way overboard on the ole wax, using nearly 3x the amount prescribed. oops. oh, well, it’ll come off in the refreeze groom we get tomorrow. Anyway, I’m really excited to be back into it, it’s feeling right this time. So if y’all’re into heading up to meadows sometime, or putting together a bigger trip, drop a line.

UP Women’s Soccer

Yay ladies! You kick ass! I love looking at the little school comparisons…everyone you play is like 10x your size. And you bust their chops. Drop a line if you ever want to setup a scrimmage…my men are down. Y’all outclass us, but I think it’d be a fun match.

Update: I heard on NPR that there’ll be a celebration at Pioneer Square today (Friday) around noon (or slightly before). Way to go ladies…keep on smilin’!

GDST D-2 Champs!

My men’s team won the D-2 championship on Sunday (at the same time, the Pilots were showing UCLA a thing or two. This is pretty much the recap I sent the squad (I only mentioned goals, but we had a kickass game, and our opponents played with class…it was a good game).

Goals were tough to come by in the first half, and the sides withdrew
0-0. The second half, GDST opened flat, but didn’t allow
anything into the net. Just as I was beginning to fear a trip to the
penalty spot to decide the game, Kenny unleahed an insane goal, settling
a chipped passed with his chest and sending a half-volley from around
the 18 off the outside of his right sailing over the keeper, against the
left upright, where it bounced straight across settling against the
right net wall.

Shortly thereafter, young standout Anthony (right outside middie)
receive a beautiful ball past the defense setting him up for a 1-1
against the keeper, sending it confidently near post and out of reach.

And not settling for two, Briggs sent the ball into traffic near the 18,
a viable shot was taken by one of our middies, the deflection settling
at Alex’s feet out past the corner of the 18, and sent right back in,
burying it into the back of the net like a ringin’ a bell.

In the closing seconds of the game, Thunder! was awarded a free kick in
the red zone, threaded beautifully past the GDST wall and just out of
reach of the keeper. The last touch of the game was from the center

Final: 3-1. good guys.

GDST proceed to celebrate at Fire on the Mountain, I’d estimate a good number
pitchers of beer were consumed, one of them by the floor in a
miscommunication ending up with a table overturned, beer spilled, glass
broken, and yours truly lying on the floor still in his chair. My only
score of the season, I’d say.

The classic was, at the time of the incident Anil was at the counter
acquiring two more pitchers. While I’m still on the floor the nice
lady, confirmed “do you still want two?” which he correct, “uh, make
that one.” Well, we kept a steady stream going for another while, without incident.

Thanks to Jordan and Sara and their team at Fire on the Mountain for tolerating our noisy little gang, and for the great wings and fine beer selection! Next time I’ll call ahead, I promise!

Winter Beer Fest

sorry, didn’t go. honestly, I don’t really like it that much. Unless you hit it early in the day, which I maybe could’ve done, the lines are horrorshow, you are elbow to elbow with everybody to the point of spilling anything more than half full, and the beers are so strong that you can only have a few…it is at the winer beerfest that I’d prefer to go with taster sizes, but refer to my comment on the lines…even with a full cup, you can finish it just waiting in line for the next. And I’m a moderate paced consumer. Think long distance runner. So instead, I went to my buddy Scott’s place for some soccer (recast of the UP women’s semifinal) viewing, a foosball tourney, and some grubbin deschuttes ESB or whatever they’re calling it now. Scott is a beer lover himself, as are the others (mosty teammates) who were there, so it was time quite well spent.
